The milk production in Greece is declining

According to the official data of ELGO-Dimitra, the domestic production is constantly decreasing in the first four months of 2022, as a result of the reduced feeding of the animals, due to the high cost of feed.

At the same time, other worrying events mark the negative climate of the day: the increase in the slaughter of productive animals and the departure of many breeders from the profession. Also, the reduction of domestic milk is to the detriment of consumers and has led to large imports.

As pointed out in a question submitted to the Parliament by SYRIZA MPs, “according to the data, in 2021 3,000 more tons of cow’s milk were imported and twice as many tons of sheep’s milk were imported in the country compared to the previous year. Also, indicatively, the imports in goat milk cream jumped by 434% “.

A few days ago at the general assembly of the Hellenic Livestock Association, it was pointed out by the presidency that “every week more than 600 productive cows go for slaughter but also the sheep and goat producers reduce the productive animals so that they can keep the rest of the herd”.
