TOPOUZIS PETROS
PROFITIS, LANGADAS
Coming from a breeding family, Petros Topouzis has been engaged in animal husbandry for 40 years. He keeps his livestock unit in the village Profitis, Langadas, just 40 minutes away from the Fromagerie ARVANITI and supplies the dairy with fresh milk on a daily basis.
In the unit, which Petros maintains in the last 10 years, are beingbred and reproduced 250 sheep and goats, mainly of the Chios breed.
The animals graze around the unit with corn, barley, wheat straw and bur.
The milking is done in the modern bail of Petros, every morning and afternoon, and it takes about 2 hours to complete.
On a daily basis, the sheep and goats are milked from January to September to offer their fresh milk to the Fromagerie ARVANITI.
Most milk is milked during the spring (March-May). The farm is under the hygiene controls of the domestic Veterinary Service (Lagkadikia), which controls with annual blood samplings for possible animal diseases, such as brucellosis.
With the help and advice of the Zootechnical Dept of our dairy amounted specialized diet for Petros animals, and so, last year the unit doubled the milk production to about 20 tons, and this year is expected to reach even 40 tons.
